Builders Know the Value of Post Caps

Builders Know the Value of Post Caps

It doesn’t matter how much you think you know as a do-it-yourselfer, you can’t know everything about everything. That’s why I have made it a habit to pay consultant’s in their fields to come by for an hour or two and help me plan when I have a job that could be bigger and harder than I expect. This practice has saved me time and time again from landscaping, hardscaping, building out a garage and putting up a deck and fence.

One of the things I learned during this process was the importance of post caps. I have always looked at post caps as one of those unnecessary things that people buy to “decorate” with. Though they are decorative, post caps are very important for the health and life of your posts, which are the bedrock of your fence!

Your fence will fail if your posts fail. As important as that is just think if your posts fail on your deck, this could be a total disaster! Now, don’t get me wrong, the posts are not going to fail right away but a post left to its own devices will eventually deteriorate from exposure to the elements as well as insect damage. The cap on top of the post serves as a seal to eliminate the chances of these types of exposure.

After hearing about this and then going and looking at some decks and fences that have post caps and comparing them to those that didn’t have post caps, I was convinced I would need to just plan on buying post caps for the projects that have posts. The good news is they were relatively inexpensive compared to other parts of the project and there is a good amount of selection available as well including lighted alternatives that kill two birds with one stone.

But don’t take my word for it. Talk to a professional builder or fence contractor and they will tell you the same thing. If that means paying them for and hour or two of their time it will be worth it in the long run.…

The Beauty of Hand Crafted Furniture

The Beauty of Hand Crafted Furniture

Hand crafted furniture is essential in any household for normal day to day activities and convenience. It also adds to the aesthetic value of the household in terms of their strategic placement and their quality.

Through the years, furniture has crossed the threshold of just being a hinge and joint affair, it has become a craft and hence the revival of traditional carpentry as an art. This is in a bid to respond to individual tastes and needs creatively with the same zeal as antiques.

Custom Made

The beauty with hand crafted furniture is the versatility it comes with. The buyer has a say to even the wildest of imaginations and can dictate what he intends to eventually see as part of his household. A lot of attention to detail and care is taken, since the carpenter is out to provide a one of a kind experience, as opposed to a production line churning out basic furniture.

An Art Form in Its Own Right

If you have ever seen an antique piece and taken time to admire the dedication, time, and thought that went into the particular piece, you will come to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship behind every piece of furniture. Because of its uniqueness, every piece is a prototype and exactly the same to no other, since no two people have the same tastes and preferences.

Woodworking and carpentry is a noble art form. Some of the historical greats, even in the Bible have alluded to their craftsmanship. To be able to capture imagination and make it very practical is a feat in itself. The result, timeless and durable pieces of furniture, bound to make your house look like a palace.

Significant Cost

The cost is slightly higher than the average furniture in a retail setting. This is because of the time, effort and specificity of producing custom made furniture which translates to more labour. In addition, the tools, space, and raw material, especially the exotic kind, is also part of the cost trickling down to you.

The good thing about such unique furniture is that it never loses its value. This is very evident with furniture being used as collateral and security in mortgage and bank loan transactions. Moreover, it has a good resale value, probably higher than the initial cost, depending on the craftsmanship and uniqueness. So worry not, this might be a worthwhile investment in the long term.

So go on, venture into the realm of hand crafted furniture, it is definitely worth your while.…

Choosing a Vine for Your Landscape

Choosing a Vine for Your Landscape

In my last article, I mentioned (with some negative connotation) English Ivy. Unfortunately, as elegant as this vine is, along with being an invasive species, it can cause significant structural damage to whatever it grows upon.

However, this shouldn’t tarnish the reputation of all vines and ivies. There are many species when it comes to vines that can add a special appeal to your landscape. They may be used in landscapes as groundcover, decoration for a fence or wall, or shading on an arbor or trellis. Dense vines can even create enough shade to cool the seating area on a deck or patio. Another advantage of vines is that many species are attractive through all seasons, with flowers in the spring, foliage in the summer, colour in the autumn, and texture in the winter months.

When considering vines for your landscape, the most important factor to take into account is where the vine will be growing. If it will be growing on a permanent structure or building (such as your home) then clinging vines should be avoided. Clinging vines attach to their supports with specialized growths, like small claws or suction cups, which can be extremely difficult to remove. Like English Ivy (a species of clinging vine), they can also cause considerable damage when they work into crevices. Although some species are safer than others, you should consult an expert before allowing a vine to climb your home, and to be safest the best choice is to build a trellis a foot or more in front of the house for the plant.

For a trellis or arbour, you might consider wrapping, twining or sprawling vines. Wrapping vines, like Star Jasmine, wrap around large or small objects in their path, making beautiful intertwining patterns on either side of a trellis. Twining vines, such as grape vines, also wrap around their supports but only by their small tendrils that grab onto anything in their reach.

Climbing roses, which are a type of sprawling vine, are best for hanging gardens or low growing structures, as they must be tied to their supports. Though they can also be vicious when untamed, they make beautiful draping floral vines.

If you are concerned that your fence, trellis or arbour might not be strong enough to support a heavy vine, then consider trying an annual variety such as Morning Glory Vine or Moon Flower. These light-weight species are less risky and can be used in combination to create a landscape that flowers in the morning and at night.

You have thousands of choices when it comes to climbing vines, and once you narrow your choices down to some varieties that are safe for your particular use, you’ll find many suitable choices, and you’ll probably come across some great new ideas for your landscape too. Do your homework and talk to an expert and you’ll be on your way to starting a beautiful new addition to your landscape.…

Do You Want to Maximize Your Dining Room Space? Follow the Following Guides

Do you have a small dining room space? If so, you will need something to do so that you can maximize it. There are some ways you can do. One of the ways is by making savvy picks. For more information, you can read the following tips.

Step one: think about a drop-leaf table.

This table can easily expand for accommodating your additional diners. Tables which can be easily expanded are those with the shape of rectangular and also square. You can extend this table to a full circle so that it is able to provide you maximum flexibility for accommodating more people at the same table.

Step two: utilize a banquette

Banquette is ideal to be used for squeezing some more people around your table. It will be so ideal to be used for inviting your friends with their children. It is able to bring a warm and relaxed setting. Also, it is able to help you use the space efficiently.

Step three: reconsider a table that is visible while you are dining

If your space is really squeezing, you can pick the table that can be attached to the wall and popped up when it is in use. It looks like an old-fashioned ironing board which an collapse flat to the wall when it is not in use.

Step four: avoid glass

Although glass is aesthetic for most settings, it is not ideal to be used for small space. It can not help you manage your small place. It does not let any drop leaves. Solid Oak Sideboards for Your Home

Solid Oak Sideboards for Your Home

There are many ways to make use of a solid oak sideboard in one’s home. While traditionally, the oak sideboard was a feature of the formal dining room, these days they are also used as living room furniture as well. Sideboards were originally used to store china and silverware and as an extra surface on which to place food before it was served at the dining table. They became popular in the houses of the newly affluent and thus also served as a sort of status symbol. Many people choose an antique oak sideboard for their dining room as they wish to bring some of that feeling into their homes. These people feel that the formal dining room should still serve to impress, and thus choose the furniture that will have that effect. However, those who want a sideboard for storage or for use as part of a mellow decor can find good modern oak sideboard choices as well. These can include small oak sideboards as well as light oak sideboards, which have less of the ponderous feeling that large, impressive sideboards so often have.

One popular style that can be considered an antique, but can also suit modern tastes, is that of the mission oak sideboard. Mission furniture was mostly made with white oak that was stained with ammonia fumes, and this plus the craftsman designs yielded a product with sensible lines and an elegant look. These are dark without being too dark, and can potentially be used both for rooms that look more serious as well as ones which are more casual. This is one design where solid oak was the rule, though it may take a bit of searching to find mission sideboards for which this is still true.

Solid oak is still treasured by woodworkers and furniture buyers alike. Throughout the ages, it has been valued for its strength and beauty, which is why servers made of oak are still popular today. In contrast to oak veneer, solid oak will tend to have a more substantial feel to it if a lighter wood has been used with the veneer. Some of the more exotic or flamboyant looking grains may be more readily available in veneers, however, as they are hard to get and veneering allows a relatively small amount of wood to be usable for visual effects.…

Savoy Bar and Grill

Savoy Bar and Grill

Two brothers, already well known in the area for their other profitable restaurants, want to open a third location that is “notably more upscale” than its sister establishments, a “blend among a steakhouse along with a seafood restaurant,” with a regular check of $30 to $40 per person. They chose to remodel an current restaurant. Their priorities: intelligent product flow, impeccable sanitation, along with a sophisticated but unpretentious dining experience with a focus on wine.

CHALLENGES:

An very tight room for that display hot line. The owners wish to bake all their own bread and eventually supply bread to other restaurants. The ventilation hood was not where the original plans stated it was located! The current configuration took up precious aisle room, requiring that an area where customers pick up food be redesigned. The decision to make use of heavy-duty equipment, which is bigger (deeper) than comparable, caf?-style equipment, to meet the restaurant’s possible volume needs.

Placement of an ice cream freezer so it would not be affected by proximity to high-heat gear. (The restaurant makes its own ice creams and sorbets.) Placement of remote cooling gear (the refrigeration compressor) on the roof of the creating. Owners wanted to use the existing walk-in cooler and keep restrooms in existing locations from the creating. A separate kitchen for that bar and lounge region.

COMMENTS FROM THE DESIGN TEAM:

“It is compact and we can create items quickly; and it’s easy to clean, simply because the gear is sitting on curbs and the fryers are on casters. This may be the first kitchen area I worked in exactly where everything is seamless. Gear is placed so you can find no gaps among equipment, and no food particles can accumulate on the floor or between pieces of equipment.”-Bob Peterson, executive chef “This region is about 18 feet lengthy by 12 feet wide. Simply because we had to use the existing

hood room, this area is very tight.

There may be as many as four people functioning in this area, so the cooking program must be precise in every way. No 1 can cross over an additional individual.”-Jim Lawrentz, kitchen designer, National Restaurant Supply, El Paso, Texas “We had some difficulty obtaining the refrigeration lines in for remote refrigeration. They had to be brought in through a back corner and run via the wall, and come out in areas that we designed into the counter exactly where electrical, refrigeration, and plumbing lines came in. As soon as the counter is set, you cannot pull it up to make adjustments. This may be the kind of main challenge I enjoy.”-Jim Lawrentz.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE STYLE:

A 45-seat lounge, 60-seat covered patio, two meeting rooms (36- and 50-seat, 1 with audio visual equipment), a 25-seat wine tasting area, along with a 140-seat main dining room all were incorporated into the 10,000-square-foot room. The kitchen is 1,800 square feet. A wood-fired oven for bread baking and vegetable roasting has wood storage beneath the …
