How To Pick A Good Persian Rug

How To Pick A Good Persian Rug

Persian rugs or carpets are not just beautiful, but they are also practical. You can easily match one with the size of the floor, and you can also choose one that matches the other furniture pieces and the design theme of a particular room in your house (e.g. classic, formal, rustic, modern, etc). But in order to pick the best Persian rug, there are several things that you have to take into consideration. Below are the things you need to think about before buying a beautiful Persian rug.

1. Consider the space available

Before you buy a Persian rug, you need to know where you are going to put it and how much space do you have in that particular room. You should follow the guidelines below:

– Bedroom: If you have a queen-sized bed, you should choose a rug which has a 5′ side (e.g. 5’x3′, 5’x7′, or 8′), depending on the size of the room. Placing runners in front of an armoire or along the room side also creates an appealing effect.

– Dining room: The carpet should be placed below the dining table and chairs. For a rectangular table with 6 – 8 chairs, you will need an 8’x10′ rug, while a table that seats 10 – 12 requires an 8’x11′ or 9’x12′ carpet.

– Living room: You can place a rug under the furniture but it is okay if you choose not to. But it would be better if you do not put it under the furniture to avoid damages. The ideal size is 5’x7′, 8′, or 6’x9′.

– Hallway: A runner is usually the most appropriate type of rug to use for the hallway. But always remember to save 1/4 to 1/3 of the width of the room for flooring border. For a 3′ wide hallway, saving 1/4 of it means choosing a 27″ wide runner, while saving 1/3 means selecting a 2′ wide runner.

2. Consider the quality

When choosing a Persian rug, you also need to factor in the quality. Below are some factors that determine the quality of a rug:

– The weaving: Consistent weave is very important for the rug’s longevity. You should check the back of the rug for irregular weaving.

– The knots: The tighter the knots, the better. Rugs with loose knots have fewer knot counts compared to the ones with tighter knots. Rugs with high knot counts are stronger and usually more expensive.

– The selvages and ends: Each selvage and end of the rug should be straight and secured properly. Also make sure that the width dimensions at both ends are the same.…

The Charm of the Fireplace Endures Part III

The Charm of the Fireplace Endures Part III

The charm of the fireplace endures; by means of technology, it keeps pace with today. The electric fireplace is economical and offers us endless options for integrating it into the d?cor of our homes. The dancing flame and glowing embers effect of the electric fireplace can bring an intimate mood to any room at any time since the heater is optional. For the occasions throughout the year when the central heating is not required, but there is a slight chill in the room, the electric fireplace will provide the solution. Now we move away from the great/living room to the dining areas of your home as the next area to consider adding a fireplace.

Consider your kitchen’s eating area that you use every day. If each day were ideal the family would share three mealtimes around the kitchen table. However, the pace demanded by today’s schedules may limit the time that the family spends together at the dining table. If space is available in your informal eating area, then why not create a warm intimate environment to make family meals memorable. A calm enjoyable atmosphere in which to share a meal and the events of the day is important to the family relationship.

The formal dining room is another area to consider integrating an electric fireplace. The size of your dining room and the furniture that you may already have in place will govern your selection. A small, perhaps, petite fireplace can be selected or a corner model. If existing furniture pieces do not allow for a wall or corner fireplace, then give consideration to a wall hanging fireplace hung over the buffet as an alternative to a picture or a mirror. A specially prepared meal served on fine china, by candlelight, in a dining room bathed in the glow from a fireplace turns dinner into an event.

Mirrors are no longer relegated to the bedroom or the bathroom in the capacity of a looking glass. Mirrors can be hung above the mantle providing more light and the illusion of increased space in the room.

In these articles we have suggested areas in your home where an electric fireplace could be added to the d?cor to enhance the charm of the room. Make decorating decisions with which you are comfortable and that reflect your personality. Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box and try something new. Go ahead add some color to a room, even if it is just on the wall that you plan to place an electric fireplace. Whatever color you choose to paint the walls in the rest of the room, choose a deeper shade of the same color to paint the wall against which you plan to place the fireplace. Your room now has an effective focal point. Time to set aside all of your fears and plunge into your decorating project! Have fun!…

Making Your Dining Room a Gathering Place

Making Your Dining Room a Gathering Place

The dining room is traditionally the room in which food and people gather. During the present day this room is normally located next to the kitchen, although historically it would have been located on a completely different floor all together. The rooms of old would have been furnished with huge dining tables generally long and rectangular in shape and surrounded by vast amounts of grand chairs. These tables have kept their shape though time but have obviously been downsized considerably to enable them to fit into the modern day houses.

Although the style and decor of houses has changed dramatically over time, many people still prefer to use traditional furniture when fitting out their dining room. A large number of people believe the dining room to be the only place left where the family can gather to talk and eat together at the end of a long hard day. For this reason many feel it important to keep the room decorated traditionally. Some however, generally those without children or those who frequently hold dinner parties or banquets, prefer to opt for more formal dining room furniture.

These various types of dining room furnishings come in many styles and a wide range of different materials. The majority of traditional dining room furniture is derived from various different types of wood. A common wood used is pine, it is a soft wood and therefore easily molded into the shapes and sizes required to make the furniture. It also is easily aged to give an authentic and original look.

Most formal dining room furniture tends to be made of more contemporary materials such as glass and metal. Individuals who are looking for formal furnishings are generally looking for cleaner lines that cannot be provided by the more traditional techniques and materials. Metals and glass can deliver this look, they can be colored more easily also to match up with the contemporary colors used such as blacks, whites and grey.

When purchasing either of these furnishing types there are a number of ways in which to do so. Many companies can be located online, these companies will have a wide range and will always offer competitive delivery services. They will often be the cheapest option, however with them you are rarely able to see a sample of the product before purchase. If you would like to see before you buy then it is advisable to buy directly form a store.…

Useful Tips For First Time Home Buyers

Although a lot of people claim to be real estate experts, they probably don’t know as much as they say they do. These are the very same people who were present during the housing crash. Read these tips if you plan on buying real estate.

The real estate market is a dangerous sea for an amateur to navigate: consider getting yourself expert assistance. A good agent can have an exponential effect on the results you get out of buying or selling real estate. Besides their expertise in the field, real estate agents have access to information and research tools far beyond those that the homeowner can utilize.

Look at a lot of houses before you buy, even if you love the first property you tour. It can be easy to fall in love with the idea of buying a house and then, consequently, the first property you see. Make sure to tour many other properties for comparison, just to make sure that the house you choose has everything you want or need.

Don’t rule out smaller houses when looking to purchase. Smaller houses have advantages in cost of upkeep. A smaller home will allow you to be able to do upgrades to plumbing, wiring, and other items, for less, due to the smaller space that will have to be done! Give a few smaller homes a look and consider the possibilities.

Make sure when you are considering purchasing a home that you think that it is a home that you will be happy in for at least three to five years. It will take you that long to build up the equity in your home to recoup the money so you do not end up financially upside-down.

When you’re looking for your first house, be picky! You don’t want to be stuck with something that you don’t absolutely love. When you’re buying something is when you’re going to love it the most, so if you don’t absolutely love the place, you’re most likely not going to like it when you buy it.

Your decision to make an offer on a house should be based on a lot of factors. One of them is the Home Owner Association (HOA) fees. In some cases this is an insignificant amount, but sometimes the amount reaches the several hundred dollars level. You need to read all the disclosures your real estate agent gives you, and make sure you can still afford the monthly payment on your new home.

When trying to figure out what type of a home you can afford, take a good look at your budget. Mortgage companies sometimes qualify people for more than they can actually afford on a monthly basis because of all the other things that people spend money on each month. So, if you go over your budget, you need to see how much you can afford to pay monthly while still having enough to put some into savings.

Take all the “expert advice” you read online with …

5 Reasons to Have a Boundary Fence Erected Around Your Property

5 Reasons to Have a Boundary Fence Erected Around Your Property

Obviously if your property is suffering from some major structural disrepair or other pressing matters such as missing roof tiles then by all means address those first. However, your Boundary Border should be one of your first jobs attended to once you have your new house, or even equally important on older homes depending on the condition of your existing fence or boundary border.

For your boundary border there are various choices, from a Brick wall to a natural Hedgerow. Wooden Fencing however is one of the best options and here are 5 reasons why;

1 – Maintenance

If you have a shrubbery or hedgerow or some other kind of natural border, inevitably it is a tedious task to stay on top of it. Being a living and growing part of your garden means you constantly have need to get your gardening shears or hedge clippers out with your step ladders to keep it looking neat and tidy. With a Wooden Fence border, this eliminates the need for constant pruning.

2 – Privacy

With a nice wooden fence you can ensure your garden is private and free from the prying eyes of your neighbors. Most areas enforce a 6ft height maximum, which is ample to keep your garden and property boundary private.

3 – Aesthetically Pleasing

There are various styles of wooden fencing, and although a well maintained Topiary can look pleasing to the eye, with decorative wooden fencing you can achieve stunning borders around your property that compliment the decor of the house.

4 – Longevity

If you choose a professional fence erecting service that uses best quality materials then you should have a boundary fence that will be standing strong for many years to come. Tantalized and pressure treated fence panels are weather resistant, and it is easy to give them an extra coat of weather shield type wood treatment or similar substance. Even if you buy your own materials and erect it yourself you can treat your fence so that it will be standing proud for a long time.

5 – Costs

Although a brick walled boundary border will look substantial, it will also leave a substantial hole in your bank account. It takes a long time to erect as well. A Wooden fence however will be cheaper than a brick wall, and if erected well will last nearly as long.

Don’t forget about the cost saving incurred from not having to trim your hedge or topiary anymore either!

As you can see from the points mentioned above, a wooden fence is an excellent choice for your Homes boundary border. There are many types and styles of wooden fence to choose from which means that no matter what style your property is there will be a suitable option of fencing for your needs.…

Tips When Buying Your Dining Room Table

Tips When Buying Your Dining Room Table

One thing you will need for your dining table is versatility. It should fit various occasions such as for causal meals, formal and informal gatherings. It should also serve as a buffet table for big parties. It should also be suited for other activities besides dining like working and gaming activities.

You should know your purposes for your dining table.

If you have a gaming room and a study room, then you might just allot this table for dining purposes. Do you often host parties and invite guests over? Then your dining table must be presentable and fitting for different occasions.

Your dining table should rightly fit in your dining room.

It should be neither too big nor too small as it will be the central furniture in the room. To be exact and sure, get the measurements of your dining area to get the perfect fit. You should also consider the dimensions of the entrance of this room. Of course, the table must fit the entrance so you will not have a hard time getting it inside.

As per the table’s measurements, a standard rule advises that you to allot 30 to 36 inches of space from the table’s edge to the wall and other furniture.

This space will allow a person to move back his chair with ease. If your dining table is too big for the room that it leaves no extra space for people to move, then dining would be an uncomfortable experience for all of you.

The shape of the table also matters.

Generally, you should follow the shape of your dining room if it has a definite shape. If the room can accommodate any table of any shape, you should base your choice on the kind of setting you want to foster in the room.

For a personal and friendly meal, opt for a square table. A square table is the best shape for small dining rooms as well.

A round table will allow more socialization for guests.

A rectangular table is the fitting shape for a big dining room and for big families. This will also do great if you often host big parties. This table can also serve the purpose of a buffet.

A round dining table is perfect for social gatherings where one needs to talk to more than two people. This is also a perfect gaming table as you can interact with every player in the room. You need to have a big space for a round dining table though.

You can choose various finishing for your dining table such as wood, acrylic, veneer, and glass tabletops. Lacquered wood is easier to clean and gives a beautiful shine.

Pick a color that will suit the style of your living room. Choose materials that are strong and durable.

Your dining table should serve your needs and meet your requirements.

It should suit your taste and reflect a bit of your personality as the homeowner.…

Australia’s Major Invasive Species

Australia’s Major Invasive Species

Taking species from natural environments and introducing them to foreign ones can, and has caused many unintended consequences. The following cases have caused considerable destruction of Australia’s environment and natural ecology. While the issue needs to be addressed at a national level, individual farmers may be able to resist some pests’ damaging effects through the use of protective canopies

Cane Toads

Cane toads were introduced from their native South America, to control the native cane beetle, which damages sugar cane crops. In addition to being unsuccessful in this pursuit, the cane toad has gone on to become a major national menace. From their limited introduction in Northern Queensland in 1935, they have procreated rapidly, up to a population of over 200 million. They have also spread dramatically, right through Queensland, into New South Wales, and west into the Northern Territory.

Foxes

Unlike the cane toad, foxes were introduced to Australia for leisure, namely hunting, in the mid 19th century. Ironically, more hunting than ever is needed to try and reduce the out of control population of feral foxes. Baiting is also used to try and control a population numbering over 7 million. Foxes have been responsible for the extinction of several native Australian animals, for which foxes became a predator.

Rabbits

Around the same time that foxes were being introduced for hunting, so too were rabbits, for the same purpose. By eating native plants, rabbits have been responsible for exposing topsoil, making land susceptible to erosion. The use of Myxomatosis helped reduce Australia’s rabbit population from an estimated 600 million to 100 million. Unfortunately, rabbits became resistant to myxomatosis and populations recovered to possibly 200-300 million. A similar experience unfolded with the accidental release of calicivirus, which reduced rabbit populations, until rabbit populations became resistant.

Feral Cats

Cats have been in Australia since the time of the convicts, and continue to be a popular pet. With cats being very adept at catching small animals, it is believed that Australia’s large feral cat population has had a very negative effect on Australia’s native fauna. In an interesting twist, feral cats have, however, been helpful in also feeding off wild rabbits, another introduced pest. Feral cats cover much of Australia’s territory, with the exception of regions with dense rainforest.

Introduced Birds

Most Australians will recognise the ubiquitous Indian Mynah, so prevalent due to its prolific breeding. It was introduced into Australia to control locust plagues. Indian Mynahs can disrupt native bird populations, by forcing them from their eggs and nests. Common starlings and rock pigeons are also introduced pests.

Other Pests

Australia’s native freshwater fish populations have been decimated by the introduction of more powerful species from overseas into local river systems. Such fish include very damaging carp and trout, as well as redfin perch and mosquitofish.

Other types of introduced pests include insects such as wasps, bees and fire ants. Marine pests include mussels and the crown of thorns starfish, the latter being extremely deadly to coral …

Why the Shape and the Size of Dining Tables Are Essential When Getting Dining Sets

Why the Shape and the Size of Dining Tables Are Essential When Getting Dining Sets

Of course you want your dining room to be pleasant and comfortable enough for you and your visitors to dine in. But if you have a limited budget when it comes to purchasing dining tables, you want to make sure that you get access to the right choice of dining sets to fit your own preference.

Probably you are thinking what would be the best choice when it comes to dining furniture. Would it be the traditional dining sets of tables and chairs made of different kinds of woods, or would you prefer the modern ones made of aluminum and glass? Whichever is your choice, you have to keep in mind that there are important things to consider when it comes to purchasing such dining sets and that is the shape and the size of the dining tables as well as the chairs.

Why The Shape is Important

The shape of your dining furniture is important because this will set the mood in your dining room. More often the shape of the tables depend on what their purpose would be. Like for instance if its is rectangular or oval and shape. This would be more of the typical dining table you will see which may signify authority in the house because the two round or smaller edges of the table is where the leaders of the house will be sitting at.

However, if it’s a round table, you will find this to be the table of those who find authority in the dining table not an issue. Everybody is considered at the same level as they dine in this rounded shape dining table.

Why The Size is Important

The size of the dining tables and chairs are important because the size will determine the seating capacity of the dining set and if it fits the number of people that will be dining on it on a regular basis. Another thing is that, the larger the dining set you will acquire, the larger the space that you will be needing.

You will have to take note of both to make sure that the furniture that you will be getting is worth the value of your time and your money. You don’t just decide on purchasing dining sets by looking at its price and your budget, but you should also consider its functionality and if the style is appropriate for your dining room.…

Using Bar Stools In The Kitchen

Using Bar Stools In The Kitchen

Although you may be in the market for a few stools for your kitchen counter and breakfast nook, consider the benefits of investing in bar stools rather than the formal kitchen counter stools that you may find on the market. There are many reasons for doing just that. Perhaps the best, though, is that you can easily choose between a huge range of style selections and really add some interest to the space by choosing from the range of bar stools on the market. Go ahead and get creative with these.

Choose The Right Stool

Before you do invest in these, do take the time to ensure that the stools will work in your kitchen. There are a variety of kitchen counter heights so your first step is to measure the amount of space under the kitchen countertop where you wish to position these to the floor. You do not want the height of the stool’s seat to come within at least six inches of the top of the counter if possible. If so, it will be difficult for people to sit there comfortably. If this is not possible because the counter top is lower, then ensure there is enough room for the stools to be comfortably pulled away from the counter.

Consider Your Style Options

Next, consider the space around you. What decorative items in the kitchen area can help you to choose the style of the stools? For example, you may have decorative pots and pans hanging from the ceiling. You may have other metalwork within the kitchen. If this is the case, pick up on this and invest in metal bar stools for the kitchen counter. On the other hand, you may have a color theme throughout the space. If that is the case, ensure you buy stools that work well with that color especially when it is prominent in the space. The good thing is that you will find many options to select from in color.

That is not all there is to take into consideration, though. You also want to consider if you want the bar stools to have backs or not. In the kitchen area, having that extra support can be nice, but if there is limited room, those backless barstools will work exceedingly well. You may also want to choose a classic look or a more modern look, depending on the décor in this space of your home.

There are many exciting pieces to select from in metal bar stools, wooden options and even wrought iron bar stools. Take a few minutes to consider which look can work best in your space. On the other hand, you may want to invest in stools that you simply love and decorate your entire kitchen around this look. Just remember, you can find discount bar stools that look great and function well. You do not have to spend a lot of money on these stools to allow them to add …

Creating An Outside Room Ready For The Summer

Creating An Outside Room Ready For The Summer

When the warmer weather approaches, the idea of creating an outdoor living space will inspire and encourage open-air entertaining throughout the summer months. Outside dining rooms can be created with all the comforts of an indoor dining room and are paramount when created as an extension of the home. Designing an outside room can be straight forward with some simple planning in advance and once completed, even a basic outside room will enhance the use and appearance of the overall garden space.

Planning The Outside Room

Regardless of the size of the yard space available, creating an outdoor room for dining can easily be achieved by planning the room before all else. Locating the perfect space to create an outside dining area may be obvious. Using an existing decking or patio space will drastically cut the time it takes to create the room and if close to the house, make it feel like a true extension of the home. However, when no such space exists, an area of the garden that promotes peace and a relaxing atmosphere will work just as well. Keep functionality in mind when planning for an outdoor dining room for the space to be used on a continual basis.

After pinpointing the location of the room, there are several basic components to consider. When these specific components are combined the perfect outside dining room will be formed. The first basic component to consider is the flooring. The use of hardscaping for the flooring of an outside room will ensure the room is clearly defined. Features such as wooden decking, stone or brick paving, tiles and concrete patios are all considered flooring hardscape. The outside dining room will also need to be protected from the elements. To establish a dining area that can be used in all types of weather, use a cover such as a shade cloth, an outdoor awning or gazebo style roofing.

Decorating The Outside Room

To make recurrent use of an outside dining room, comfortable dining room furniture is essential. When choosing outdoor furniture for the room, take into consideration the material the furniture is produced from. Even with adequate roof covering, not all furniture material will survive the elements and water resistant options will assist with the longevity of the chosen furniture.

With the larger items of an outside dining room in place, suitable lighting can be beneficial for setting the mood of the ultimate outside dining experience. When the sun sets, well placed lanterns and candles will give the room character with ambient lighting. Dining hours can be extended with some simple outdoor lighting and make the outside room into a retreat for guests. For cooler summer nights, a heat source such as a fireplace or fire pit will prolong the use of the outdoor room in summer and for cooler months in general.

The final basic component to consider when creating an outside dining room area is the decoration. To make an …

Update Your Dining Room With Modern Chairs

Update Your Dining Room With Modern Chairs

Dining rooms are inherently formal. Because of this, many people associate the words uptight and uninviting with these spaces. Perhaps it is because formal dining room chairs are stiff and honestly quite uncomfortable. However, your room does not need to be cramped and awkward. Instead you can use modern chairs to update your look making it significantly more contemporary and even more comfortable.

Manufacturers have changed their style over time as well. They actually have begun to shift away from those hard and uninspiring dining chairs. Today’s modern creations are not only stylish but relaxing and cozy as well. It’s not difficult to find a lush leather chair designed specifically for the dining room. These chairs are truly pieces of art rather than just furniture. Their architecture, detail work, and overall aesthetic make them visually interesting to have in your room in addition to being quite luxurious to sit in.

When looking to add modern chairs to your dining room there are many ways to go about it. If you want something different with a bit more panache, you might want to purchase two different styles of chairs. If you decide to go with this option, you will want to choose chairs with a similar theme or the same color palette. For example, if brown leather chairs are your thing, you might want to stick with ones that have a similar feature such as brass accents for instance. So even though the chairs are different, choosing a common feature will give your room design a cohesive feel so that the variety appears planned rather than simply a hodge-podge of furniture.

The great thing about using modern chairs in your dining room is that you will have a bit of versatility in terms of seating throughout the rest of your home. When you are having people over it seems like there is never enough seating. You probably don’t want to use those big and heavy chairs that surround your formal dining room table. Not only are they hard to move, but they have a very specific look to them that might coordinate with the more informal areas of your home. However, when you decide to go with modern chairs, you provide yourself with much more versatility in your home. Now you not only have additional seating available for those events when you need it, but you’ve got seats that are practical as well.

Some may think that modern chairs won’t work in a more traditional and formal dining room. However, design has evolved to encompass fusions of style. Today it is not uncommon to mix older or more classical pieces with very modern pieces. This juxtaposition of different designs is actually very pleasing to the eye. It can create a lot of depth and variety to your room d?cor.

Find pieces that you love and do not be afraid to integrate them into your dining room’s furniture plan. If a piece speaks to you …

The 5 Easy Tricks To Keep Your Dining Room Clean

The 5 Easy Tricks To Keep Your Dining Room Clean

De-clutter. This is the first move that you need to do. Remove all items that do not belong in the dining room and put them back where they belong. Assign a place (it can be the garage or the shed) where unwanted items will be placed. Assign a basket for bills or mails that you still want to keep; if they are of not use to you anymore put them straight away to the trash can.

Relieve the dining room with plenty of bric-a-brac. If you do want to have them, keep it to a minimum. Bric-a-brac gathers dust and the dining room is one place that cannot afford to get too dusty. Another way to do this is to separate decorative items that you use for a particular season. Put them in separate containers and have them labeled. Use the decors that you want to use for a particular season; but then again do not put too much.

Dusting. Be sure to use the precise cleaning product in dusting or cleaning glass and wooden articles, brass, etc. Walls, ceilings and corners must be dusted, too. Get rid of cobwebs. Move furniture to clean it from all positions. Ceiling fan must be dusted, as well but make sure you use a ladder in doing this.

Change the curtains and clean windows. Dusty and unclean curtains, draperies or blinds must be changed to new ones. But before putting the new ones, clean the windows (the window glass, panes and corners).

Wash the dining table and other furniture. The dining room table must be washed well, although this must be done after each meal. Use the appropriate product in cleaning the table, chairs and table and seat covers or padding. Shelves, china cabinet and drawers must be emptied so it can be wiped well.

Sweeping or Vacuuming. When all the clutter has been removed, do the next thing which is sweeping or vacuuming and washing the floors.

Once you have done your de-cluttering, cleaning and organizing your dining room, all you have to do is maintain the orderliness and cleanliness. This is best observed by cleaning the dining room on a regular basis. A simple dusting and vacuuming will do the trick as dust will not build up that much unlike when you do it once in a month or every two weeks. A duster is a good tool in dusting; choose one with an expandable stick to reach the ceiling and lighting furniture. The dusting of the chairs and its legs and the dining room’s surfaces can be done once in a week. Mop the dust on the floors once a week. Have ready spirits to clean the windows as well as the glass of the china cabinet. Getting to the habit of cleaning your dining room regularly will help also lighten its atmosphere.…

Feng Shui and Children: How Feng Shui Can Help Your Children Succeed

Feng Shui and Children: How Feng Shui Can Help Your Children Succeed

Today’s world is extremely competitive, therefore it’s very important for parents to support children in their studies and to help them succeed in every way they can. A Feng Shui practitioner can use a compass to construct a special chart in order to discover where children are most supported in their studies.

Seems unlikely? My own daughter is very dyslexic, yet achieved top marks in her national exams. She worked very hard, obviously, but had no extra tuition at home or at school. Instead, she did her homework and exam studying in a particular part of the house where the “Flying Star” chart indicated there was an area especially advantageous for study.

What is a “Flying Star” chart?

When a Feng Shui practitioner takes a compass reading of your home, she uses that reading, together with some other information to plot tendencies and change over time. Just as an Architect’s blueprint is a design for living, so too is a “Flying Star” chart. When an Architect constructs a plan, she will indicate which rooms serve what purpose – kitchen, bathroom, dining room, bedrooms etc – and design the building around those purposes: the kitchen close to the dining room, for example, so that food remains hot when transferred between cooking and eating facilities.

However, it may be that when the family moves in, the rooms are used for different purposes over time. It may be that a dining room is converted to a downstairs bedroom for an elderly relative, for example.

A “Flying Star” chart is similar in that it is a blueprint indicating the most positive uses for spaces within a building. The building could be an office, shop or any other kind of structure. However, when helping your children to succeed with Feng Shui, the indicators we look for are, as mentioned above, areas that support study, good sleeping directions, spots that may enhance positive friendships (for networking) and good health. On the flip side, we also look for areas that may not be so supportive in order to reduce negative tendencies.

Just as an architect constructs plans in order to enhance lifestyle and reduce impediments to free flow, so Feng Shui practitioners help parents plan for their children’s success by constructing a Flying Star chart of their home. “Cures” for irritations can be as elaborate as a well placed fish tank or a chiming clock, or as simple as suggesting a child studies in one particular place rather than another.…

How to Choose and Use Your Buffet Table

How to Choose and Use Your Buffet Table

If you are thinking of buying one, you have to know what to look for.

What are the other uses for your buffet?

Transform your buffet table from a simple table into something more useful. To get the most out of your buffet, you need to know how to utilize it at its fullest.

If you are saving up on space, then you may use your buffet as the dining table. You can transform this table as a party table, too. You can also use it as a storage area for your dinnerware, glassware, china, and silver ware.

As a party table

This table may serve as the main dining table when guests are around. This is where they can gather and sit to eat. Just provide seats to accommodate all your guests. If your buffet is very spacious, you can lay out the food together with the dinnerware, utensils, glassware for each visitor.

If you are not holding a sit down party, you can use your buffet as the service table where all the food and drinks are laid out. This will allow your guests to move around, socialize, and chat with other guests. Your guests can also pick the food they want to eat easily.

You can still use the buffet for intimate dinners. If you opt not to use it as a dining table, you may use it as accent furniture instead. Drape it with a tablecloth and put decorations on top. You can put design plates, figurines, flower arrangement and pictures on the buffet table as decorations. For a more romantic appeal, you can put scented candles on the buffet table and play soft music to complement the mood.

As storage furniture

To have more use of your buffet, choose to buy one that has a lot of storage units such as doors, shelves and drawers. This will allow you to store your dinnerware, silverware, china, glassware, utensils, napkins, tablecloth and other dining items. If your buffet table has an open space or its doors are made of glass, you can arrange the items in such a way that they would appear as display items.

Features to look for:

The Size

The size will normally depend on the size of your dining room. You also need to base your choice on the number of people whom you normally invite over for dinner. Buy chairs, which will match your buffet. You can opt to buy foldable furniture that is easy to store and saves up on space.

Zen Furniture – Guide to Creating a Simple and Tranquil Home

Zen Furniture – Guide to Creating a Simple and Tranquil Home

Zen Furniture

Simplicity and the use of natural materials is key to Zen style furnishing. Open, uncluttered space should combine with soft furnishings, gentle fabric textures and light, to allow an easy flow of energy within the home, helping towards greater clarity of mind and spirit.

Reclaimed wood such as solid teak from Indonesia is ideal for Zen furniture design. Stylish reclaimed timbers deliver the quality, strength and depth of colour of mature wood, without impacting on the world’s natural resources. The traditional furniture building techniques used in Indonesia, also add a quality to the finished piece. The care and attention to detail will infuse the furniture with a sense of peace and tranquility.

Teak furniture is beautiful with its natural earthy tones, which works well in a Zen style living space. Or the wood can be stained to wonderful warm browns for those who prefer dark wood furniture.

Zen furniture pieces create an air of tranquility and calm, whilst reflecting an inner strength. It is this inner strength, combined with elegant, clean lines that make Zen furniture so appealing and effective. Interior decoration using Zen design will interact harmoniously with the spaces and forms within your home to soothe and relax the mind.

Dining Room Furniture With Zen

Creating a calming nurturing environment in the dining room, which is free from distractions, is especially important. It is here that you and your family and friends will want to relax and enjoy each other’s company. The earthy tones of natural Teak, together with contemporary Zen styling, will lend to a tangible sense of peace and harmony within the room.

A Zen interior will feature minimalist design and be relatively clutter free. It will also include elements that symbolise drawing people together and for this reason bench seating is favoured over separate chairs. Bench seating seats the whole family or group as one, and this in itself is effective in bringing everyone together.

Zen style dining tables are available in circular form, as well as the more widely used rectangular shape. It could be argued that the circular Zen dining table gets closer to Zen culture as it enables a family or group to come together without nominating a “head”. This creates a feeling of equality within the family of group of friends who are sitting together.

The minimalist principles behind Zen culture require that there be no unnecessary items within the dining room, to assist with the energy flow. It is also important that furniture items match – to avoid confusion and disharmony on the eye. To complement your dining table and chairs, pick other items for the room that are both beautiful, well matching and serve a purpose. Plenty of storage is always useful for tucking away clutter.…

It is best if you draw up a design before you start decorating and redesigning your dining room to you could end up with something that you don’t like. Try not to have it clash with the rooms that are adjacent to it especially if they share a wall. It will also help to create a mood that is booth attractive and professional looking. Matching the right colors together is a great way to create harmony in your design.

Sometimes it helps to look at things that are already in the room for ideas. It can be almost anything from vase with cut flowers to a chair or table. Have it become your focal point and inspiration piece then let your imagination fill in the rest. Use a color you find in your focal piece to choose your primary color for the walls.

Clearing out the room will ensure you don’t get paint on any of your furniture and will help in the cleanup as well. If you are replacing the floor you don’t need to worry too much about paint spilling, but if you’re not I suggest using a drop cloth. Use extra care not to get paint on any surface you don’t want to paint. By using painters tape to create a barrier you will have a much better edge on your paint.

Stains or dark paint can easily be covered with a coat of primer before you paint. It is also advised that you prime any new walls as well.

Some paints dry really fast and you may be able to give it a second coat on the same day. Try to create a balance and not go to bold on any one color or it may be a little overwhelming. Bringing your dining room to life can easily be done with an accent wall.

It also helps if you don’t leave any walls completely bare. This is especially true if it is a large space. Hanging pictures or paintings is a great way to break it up a little. If you find yourself lacking in ideas you can always watch a couple of design shows or read a magazine.…

Knowing the Different Shapes of Dining Room Tables

Knowing the Different Shapes of Dining Room Tables

When choosing a table for your dining room, it is not only the size that you need to check but also the shape. The shape must depend on the contour of your dining area as well as the number of people who will regularly use it.

Dining tables have different shapes and they are as follows:

Rectangle is the most common and most popular shape for dining tables. Since most dining rooms are rectangular, this shape of table is the most sensible thing to have. The ideal dimension for this form is 36 x 42 inches. If your dining room is narrow, get a narrow table as well. However, if the table is slimmer than 36 inches, you will have the need for a sideboard to place your food especially for big gatherings. This will give you ample space on the table to seat all of your guests.

Advantage: It can seat more than 4 people especially if you get to have the modern extendable tables.

Square tables are suitable for the same size of dining area. This suits a small-sized family since the most it can seat is four people. However, modern furniture has offered options for this type to accommodate more people with its feature of being expanded. If you are to have some visitors, you can put 2 square tables together.

Advantages:

It is ideal for a small family and small gatherings.

It provides familiarity, intimacy and is cozier.

Round tables are good for bigger get-togethers; however, you will need a bigger space. It is also suggested that when you choose this shape, get one that has a central base to accommodate more leg space. Modern furniture manufacturers also have made the option where it can be extended allowing more room for guests.

Advantages:

It offers you the opportunity to see each other’s faces even for big gatherings.

It can accommodate a big group of people.

The oval-shaped dining table is almost the same as that of the rectangular form. They occupy less space and are good for children, as it does not have sharp edges. It is likewise good for a narrow and small dining area.

Advantage: It can accommodate more people.

Choosing the shape of your dining table will be easier provided you know your preferences or requirements. True enough, you cannot just depend on the outside appearance because it appeals to you but the size and shape matters. Likewise, no matter how much you like its style and design, but if it does not fit your dining area, it will also prove to be useless.

Bear in mind that the available space you have and the furniture should go along well. Your family and your visitors must still have adequate space to move when getting up from their chair. You also need to think of some space when the chair is pushed backwards. All of these are vital when buying your table. Aesthetics, of course, is …

The Different Dimensions of Large Dining Room Tables

The Different Dimensions of Large Dining Room Tables

A typical dining room table is 108″ x 38″. However, some people have a need for larger ones. It is possible to get dining room sets in larger dimensions up to 144″ x 40″. Larger dimensions are available, but the purchaser will have to consult a cabinet maker to get larger dimensions in wood. These dimensions of up to 144″ x 40″ are available in custom made online furniture factories. When choosing the size of the dining room table, there are some important dimensions one needs to consider.

Room size is the most important. One will need after all other furniture is added to the room in the form of china cabinets and buffets, etc., 30″ to 36″ of space around the dining set. This is to accommodate the scooting of chairs out from the table and people walking around the table. If the family is very large, that is the size of the person, or in the use of overstuffed chairs at the table, the free space around the dining room set increases to 48″. Each person should have 22″ along the perimeter of the dining set for eating comfort, this will also accommodate a 20″ x 44″ area in the center of the table for food.

Once the homeowner has determined the area needed to accommodate it for his dining needs, the next area of consideration is the shape. They come in three shapes, oval, round and rectangular. The largest of the oval and round sets is 60″. The largest of the rectangular tables is 144″ x 40″.

The next considerations will be kind of wood to be used, the type of finish of the wood, the type of legs preferred, whether to have a drawer under the table top installed, and the kind of apron for the table. When dealing with custom built dining room tables, sometimes the thickness of the table top can be chosen. The style of and the wood used will make the difference. Many wood tables can have the option of leaves which will greatly increase the versatility of the dining room table, when a smaller table is desired.

When material other than wood is desired in a dining room table, acrylic and glass are options. There are limitations as well as advantages to these material choices. The limitations are they tend not to have leaves for the increase or decrease in table size. Weight of the table is a factor, with glass tables being the heaviest and wood and acrylic being the lightest. Ease of care are found in the glass and acrylic tables since one does not have to be so careful about spills on glass or acrylic as they do with wood finishes.

So, depending on the taste of the purchaser, there should be no difficulty in finding over sized dining tables for those who like to entertain large groups of people.…

Builders Know the Value of Post Caps

Builders Know the Value of Post Caps

It doesn’t matter how much you think you know as a do-it-yourselfer, you can’t know everything about everything. That’s why I have made it a habit to pay consultant’s in their fields to come by for an hour or two and help me plan when I have a job that could be bigger and harder than I expect. This practice has saved me time and time again from landscaping, hardscaping, building out a garage and putting up a deck and fence.

One of the things I learned during this process was the importance of post caps. I have always looked at post caps as one of those unnecessary things that people buy to “decorate” with. Though they are decorative, post caps are very important for the health and life of your posts, which are the bedrock of your fence!

Your fence will fail if your posts fail. As important as that is just think if your posts fail on your deck, this could be a total disaster! Now, don’t get me wrong, the posts are not going to fail right away but a post left to its own devices will eventually deteriorate from exposure to the elements as well as insect damage. The cap on top of the post serves as a seal to eliminate the chances of these types of exposure.

After hearing about this and then going and looking at some decks and fences that have post caps and comparing them to those that didn’t have post caps, I was convinced I would need to just plan on buying post caps for the projects that have posts. The good news is they were relatively inexpensive compared to other parts of the project and there is a good amount of selection available as well including lighted alternatives that kill two birds with one stone.

But don’t take my word for it. Talk to a professional builder or fence contractor and they will tell you the same thing. If that means paying them for and hour or two of their time it will be worth it in the long run.…

The Beauty of Hand Crafted Furniture

The Beauty of Hand Crafted Furniture

Hand crafted furniture is essential in any household for normal day to day activities and convenience. It also adds to the aesthetic value of the household in terms of their strategic placement and their quality.

Through the years, furniture has crossed the threshold of just being a hinge and joint affair, it has become a craft and hence the revival of traditional carpentry as an art. This is in a bid to respond to individual tastes and needs creatively with the same zeal as antiques.

Custom Made

The beauty with hand crafted furniture is the versatility it comes with. The buyer has a say to even the wildest of imaginations and can dictate what he intends to eventually see as part of his household. A lot of attention to detail and care is taken, since the carpenter is out to provide a one of a kind experience, as opposed to a production line churning out basic furniture.

An Art Form in Its Own Right

If you have ever seen an antique piece and taken time to admire the dedication, time, and thought that went into the particular piece, you will come to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship behind every piece of furniture. Because of its uniqueness, every piece is a prototype and exactly the same to no other, since no two people have the same tastes and preferences.

Woodworking and carpentry is a noble art form. Some of the historical greats, even in the Bible have alluded to their craftsmanship. To be able to capture imagination and make it very practical is a feat in itself. The result, timeless and durable pieces of furniture, bound to make your house look like a palace.

Significant Cost

The cost is slightly higher than the average furniture in a retail setting. This is because of the time, effort and specificity of producing custom made furniture which translates to more labour. In addition, the tools, space, and raw material, especially the exotic kind, is also part of the cost trickling down to you.

The good thing about such unique furniture is that it never loses its value. This is very evident with furniture being used as collateral and security in mortgage and bank loan transactions. Moreover, it has a good resale value, probably higher than the initial cost, depending on the craftsmanship and uniqueness. So worry not, this might be a worthwhile investment in the long term.

So go on, venture into the realm of hand crafted furniture, it is definitely worth your while.…

Choosing a Vine for Your Landscape

Choosing a Vine for Your Landscape

In my last article, I mentioned (with some negative connotation) English Ivy. Unfortunately, as elegant as this vine is, along with being an invasive species, it can cause significant structural damage to whatever it grows upon.

However, this shouldn’t tarnish the reputation of all vines and ivies. There are many species when it comes to vines that can add a special appeal to your landscape. They may be used in landscapes as groundcover, decoration for a fence or wall, or shading on an arbor or trellis. Dense vines can even create enough shade to cool the seating area on a deck or patio. Another advantage of vines is that many species are attractive through all seasons, with flowers in the spring, foliage in the summer, colour in the autumn, and texture in the winter months.

When considering vines for your landscape, the most important factor to take into account is where the vine will be growing. If it will be growing on a permanent structure or building (such as your home) then clinging vines should be avoided. Clinging vines attach to their supports with specialized growths, like small claws or suction cups, which can be extremely difficult to remove. Like English Ivy (a species of clinging vine), they can also cause considerable damage when they work into crevices. Although some species are safer than others, you should consult an expert before allowing a vine to climb your home, and to be safest the best choice is to build a trellis a foot or more in front of the house for the plant.

For a trellis or arbour, you might consider wrapping, twining or sprawling vines. Wrapping vines, like Star Jasmine, wrap around large or small objects in their path, making beautiful intertwining patterns on either side of a trellis. Twining vines, such as grape vines, also wrap around their supports but only by their small tendrils that grab onto anything in their reach.

Climbing roses, which are a type of sprawling vine, are best for hanging gardens or low growing structures, as they must be tied to their supports. Though they can also be vicious when untamed, they make beautiful draping floral vines.

If you are concerned that your fence, trellis or arbour might not be strong enough to support a heavy vine, then consider trying an annual variety such as Morning Glory Vine or Moon Flower. These light-weight species are less risky and can be used in combination to create a landscape that flowers in the morning and at night.

You have thousands of choices when it comes to climbing vines, and once you narrow your choices down to some varieties that are safe for your particular use, you’ll find many suitable choices, and you’ll probably come across some great new ideas for your landscape too. Do your homework and talk to an expert and you’ll be on your way to starting a beautiful new addition to your landscape.…

Solid Oak Sideboards for Your Home

Solid Oak Sideboards for Your Home

There are many ways to make use of a solid oak sideboard in one’s home. While traditionally, the oak sideboard was a feature of the formal dining room, these days they are also used as living room furniture as well. Sideboards were originally used to store china and silverware and as an extra surface on which to place food before it was served at the dining table. They became popular in the houses of the newly affluent and thus also served as a sort of status symbol. Many people choose an antique oak sideboard for their dining room as they wish to bring some of that feeling into their homes. These people feel that the formal dining room should still serve to impress, and thus choose the furniture that will have that effect. However, those who want a sideboard for storage or for use as part of a mellow decor can find good modern oak sideboard choices as well. These can include small oak sideboards as well as light oak sideboards, which have less of the ponderous feeling that large, impressive sideboards so often have.

One popular style that can be considered an antique, but can also suit modern tastes, is that of the mission oak sideboard. Mission furniture was mostly made with white oak that was stained with ammonia fumes, and this plus the craftsman designs yielded a product with sensible lines and an elegant look. These are dark without being too dark, and can potentially be used both for rooms that look more serious as well as ones which are more casual. This is one design where solid oak was the rule, though it may take a bit of searching to find mission sideboards for which this is still true.

Solid oak is still treasured by woodworkers and furniture buyers alike. Throughout the ages, it has been valued for its strength and beauty, which is why servers made of oak are still popular today. In contrast to oak veneer, solid oak will tend to have a more substantial feel to it if a lighter wood has been used with the veneer. Some of the more exotic or flamboyant looking grains may be more readily available in veneers, however, as they are hard to get and veneering allows a relatively small amount of wood to be usable for visual effects.…

Two brothers, already well known in the area for their other profitable restaurants, want to open a third location that is “notably more upscale” than its sister establishments, a “blend among a steakhouse along with a seafood restaurant,” with a regular check of $30 to $40 per person. They chose to remodel an current restaurant. Their priorities: intelligent product flow, impeccable sanitation, along with a sophisticated but unpretentious dining experience with a focus on wine.

CHALLENGES:

An very tight room for that display hot line. The owners wish to bake all their own bread and eventually supply bread to other restaurants. The ventilation hood was not where the original plans stated it was located! The current configuration took up precious aisle room, requiring that an area where customers pick up food be redesigned. The decision to make use of heavy-duty equipment, which is bigger (deeper) than comparable, caf?-style equipment, to meet the restaurant’s possible volume needs.

Placement of an ice cream freezer so it would not be affected by proximity to high-heat gear. (The restaurant makes its own ice creams and sorbets.) Placement of remote cooling gear (the refrigeration compressor) on the roof of the creating. Owners wanted to use the existing walk-in cooler and keep restrooms in existing locations from the creating. A separate kitchen for that bar and lounge region.

COMMENTS FROM THE DESIGN TEAM:

“It is compact and we can create items quickly; and it’s easy to clean, simply because the gear is sitting on curbs and the fryers are on casters. This may be the first kitchen area I worked in exactly where everything is seamless. Gear is placed so you can find no gaps among equipment, and no food particles can accumulate on the floor or between pieces of equipment.”-Bob Peterson, executive chef “This region is about 18 feet lengthy by 12 feet wide. Simply because we had to use the existing

hood room, this area is very tight.

There may be as many as four people functioning in this area, so the cooking program must be precise in every way. No 1 can cross over an additional individual.”-Jim Lawrentz, kitchen designer, National Restaurant Supply, El Paso, Texas “We had some difficulty obtaining the refrigeration lines in for remote refrigeration. They had to be brought in through a back corner and run via the wall, and come out in areas that we designed into the counter exactly where electrical, refrigeration, and plumbing lines came in. As soon as the counter is set, you cannot pull it up to make adjustments. This may be the kind of main challenge I enjoy.”-Jim Lawrentz.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE STYLE:

What You Can Do If You Have A Plumbing Problem

Plumbing issues can crop up at any time. There are some plumbing things that can seem hard while others can seem easier to deal with. No matter what your particular case may be, it is important that you are educated on plumbing, so that the problem can be fixed in a timely manner.

If you discover a frozen water pipe, turn on a nearby faucet so that thawed ice has a place to go. This can relieve the pipe pressure that could cause bursting and further home damage.

Pass on seemingly convenient cleaning products like bleach tablets and blue toilet tabs. They may get rid of toilet odors, but they can damage the rubber in the toilet, which can cause it to break down completely or to not function at all.

Ensure that if something goes wrong in your garbage disposal that you resist any and all urges you have that might make you want to put your hands inside to fix a problem. Garbage disposals are not healthy places for hands to be, even if they are not running. Locate a diagram of the garbage disposal, or some sort of troubleshooter, online.

Keep the drains in your bathtub working properly by pouring a cup’s worth of baking soda and than a cup’s worth of vinegar directly down your drain every month. This will cause the vigorous bubbling you may remember from the “volcano” in a grade school science project, so be sure to close the drain with a stopper. After a few minutes, just flush the drain out with water that has reached a boiling point. This procedure will clear the hair and soap scum out of your pipes.

Installing shower heads that are more effective can save you a lot on your energy head. Most of your water bills comes from the water you use to shower. Water-conserving shower heads are relatively affordable, but using them can save you a great deal of money within a single year.

Don’t treat your toilet like a garbage can if you want to avoid a lot of potential plumbing problems. Nothing should be flushed down the toilet except human waste and toilet tissue. Flushing sanitary napkins, diapers, disposable napkins, and other materials is a sure recipe for a clogged drain and a backed-up toilet. Also, be conservative in your use of toilet paper.

If grout has gotten stuck in the line, trying to clean it out yourself is probably not the best idea. You could dislodge the grout and cause it go further down. This works best if your pipes are plastic instead of metal. Usually, however, you will need to hire a professional for this issue.

When using the garbage disposal, do not even bother running the water. While many people think that running water in conjunction with the disposal will cause it to work more efficiently, it simply isn’t true. It could even cause food to stick to the blades of the disposal, creating damage.

As has been previously written, …

Simple Ways On How To Make The Most Out Of Plumbing

Plumbing problems can seem catastrophic if you don’t know how to fix them. Not only do you have to wait for a professional to be available to help, the cost can be through the roof! Keep reading to arm yourself with some very useful plumbing advice!

Have a professional flush your septic tank every five years or so to keep it working well. This will keep sediment from building and causing backup into the house, and possibly causing the septic system to fail. It will cost some to have the septic tank pumped, but it would cost much more to have it cleaned, repaired or replaced due to sewage back up.

Avoid paying the plumber until he finishes the job. You may need to make a small down payment before the job has begun, but you never want to pay the entire amount until you are certain the job was completed to your satisfaction. If you pay everything up front, you have no recourse if the plumber doesn’t finish the job or doesn’t do it correctly.

Knowing which tools to use and how to operate them is essential to any aspiring plumber. Use manuals and online sites to get informed before doing a plumbing project yourself. Plan thoroughly before attempting a repair. Mistakes can be very expensive to fix.

If you have a clogged toilet with the water level very low, and plunging it isn’t working, it’s possible to resolve this by pouring warm water from a bucket directly into the toilet bowl from about waist level. If one attempt doesn’t solve the problem, you can do it again once the water level stabilizes.

Avoid placing fat, grease, and other oils into your drain. They can clog your drains once they cool down. This is especially damaging to garbage disposals because the fat can make the blades turn more slowly and less efficiently. Make certain you dispose of all oils in other places other than the sink.

Pour equal parts baking soda followed by vinegar down your bathtub drain once a month. Use a plug or rag to cover the drain, because there will be a chemical reaction in the pipes. Wait until the chemical reaction runs its course, then flush the pipes by pouring in a kettle full of boiling water. Although this is useful for clearing away simple clogs made of hair and soap debris, it will not work for serious blockages.

Always use cold water when your garbage disposal is running. The cold water will help keep the blades nice and sharp and will allow for a much smoother disposal. If you use hot water it will liquefy the grease, allowing it to accumulate in your drain causing your pipes to clog.

As you can see, plumbing problems don’t have to be so difficult. If you can solve the problem yourself, you can save time waiting for a plumber, as well as saving a whole lot of money. Try applying what you’ve learned from this article next …
